History of Our Chapter's Name

Annuttaliga Chapter was organized June 11, 1985.  The name "Annuttaliga" originally applied to the extensive geological feature
called a hammock, extending from central Citrus County, across Hernando County, into the southeast part of Pasco County. The
term,  "Annuttaliga Hammock," is used on the Taylor Map of 1839;
and "Annuttaliga Hammock" is shown on the Hernando County
Soil Map of 1915.

There are two possible translations of the name. William A. Read, Florida Place Names of Indian Origin and Seminole Personal Names(Baton Rouge Louisiana State University, 1934), Part III, page 1,   suggests "bushy place" from the Seminole Creek "ANATI," meaning bushy place or thicket; and "LAIKI," meaning site. In view of the hammock character of the area, this is a plausable view. From phonetic standpoint, however, Annuttaliga is more likely derived from the Creek "NUCHKA," meaning sleep, and "LAIKI," meaning site.  Together with the vocative prefix "A,"  this would  indicate a sleeping or lying down place.
